    being dissolved in hot water, diluted sulphuric acid is dropped into the solution, until it: acquires an _acidulous taste, when on being set aside to cool, the acid falls down ina flaky crystalline state. If this be separated by a filter, the liquid, by evapo- ration, will: yield a further portion of the acid on cooling. Boracic acid, when mixed with alcohol, or other combustible substances, causes them to burn with a green flame, and when combined with alkalies, earths, &c. it forms the salts called bo- rates. When the dry acid is mixed with a small quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid, it gives _ out a transient odour resembling musk. It is so- luble in twelve parts of cold water, has no smell, and very little taste; and if dried gently it is fixed in the fire, but on being suddenly heated, while con- taining water, it sublimes in the form of crystals. Acid of Borax. So called, because it is ob- tained from borax. See Acip, Boracic. | Acid, Calcareous. See ActD, CarBonic, which has obtained the name of calcareous acid, from its being found in all lime-stones and almost all cal- careous ‘minerals. Actp, Campuoric. A crystallizable acid, ob- tained from camphor, by distilling nitric acid off it. The camphoric acid remains in the retort, while the nitric acid, being deprived of part of its oxygen by the camphor, passes over in the state of nitrous gas. The camphoric acid. is of no use in the arts, and of very little consequence to the chemist; it
