    INTRODUCTION. Tue numerous and important discoveries made by Sir H. Davy and other philosophers during the last twenty years, have gradually occasioned an entire change in the theory of Chemistry ; and it has from time to time been found expedient to make such alterations in the names of different sub- stances as should render them most expressive of their newly discovered properties, and of the pre- vailing theory of the day with regard to their com- position. Had these changes of nomenclature been made once for all; the embarrassment occa- sioned by them to the student would have been comparatively trifling; but, it is well known, that many substances no less than a dozen alterations have taken place in pérhaps the same number of years ; hence, some of the best works on Chemis- try of the eighteenth century are now become nearly incomprehensible; and even more recent publica- tions often present serious difficulties to the stu- dent. 7 | bi ™
