Description

Theoria medica Pitcarniana. Praxis medica Pitcarniana. This MS. contains both the 'Theoria' and the 'Praxis' and was probably taken down in the earlier period of Pitcairne's professorship in 1692. Signature of W[illiam] Munk M.D., F.S.A. [1816-1898], inside cover. Produced in Leyden.

Biographical note

Pitcairne was offered the post of professor of practice of physic at Leyden at the end of 1691, and accepted in a letter written on 24 January 1692. He delivered his Inaugural Address on April 26 of that year. His letter of resignation is dated 29 December 1693, but he had left Leyden perhaps in late August or December [cf. R. W. Innes Smith 'English-speaking Students of Medicine at ... Leyden', 1932, pp. 182-184].
