    consider the relation of these organs to other parts. Further, if we take into consideration the func- tions of the skin, the functions of the lungs, in re- spect of good air, and their influence on the diges- tive system ; if we consider the effects on the body of what we call cold, we mean here the various kinds of catarrhal affection, or the effects, at par- ticular times, of moisture too; if we consider the curious subject of scrofula, which, I imagine, it would not be easy to define completely, 5 though we can in general, without much difficulty, pro- nounce as to its existence ; if we regard the occa- sional tumid, and shrunk or collapsed state of the living body, with or without change in its own temperature, which, besides the effects of muscu- lar exertion, and opposite states of the surround- ing temperature, is so much under the influence of a hearty meal, of sleep, or even a tendency to it: I say, considering some or all of these, we must agree with those who are of opinion, that did we know more exactly the state of the capillaries and ultimate nervous expansions, our indications of cure would often be much more steadily directed, and on more truly physiological principles.
