    Inability to sleep, want of appetite, and restless- ness, amounting to temporary, and even violent, madness, are, with an easily discovered history of drinking, sufficient indications of this disease. The first necessary step is to get a free action of the bowels. Give a large black draught, and repeat it in six hours, if necessary. Keep a constant watch over the patient if he is at all restless, and do not use more actual restraint than is necessary for the man's safety and that of others around him. If you are very short of hands, and the man is exceedingly and continuously violent, give him a grain of opium, and repeat it, if no effect be produced, in two hours; but opium is a dangerous medicine in this disease, and should not be given unless you believe that the mail will die from exhaustion, or unless you cannot spare hands to watch him without endangering the safety of the ship. No after-treatment is required. SCUEVY. Swollen and spongy gums, dark spots and blue blotches, like bruises, about the legs, and a brawny hardness about the calves of the legs and under parts of the thighs, are the outward and visible signs of this disease.
