    DISINFECTION, FUMIGATION, AND VENTILATION. Disinfection.—If a sailor or passenger has suf- fered or lias died from any contagious or infec- tious disease, as cholera, small-pox, scarlet fever, measles, or erysipelas, all the bed and body clothes should be burnt, or disinfected in the following manner:— Plunge them into boiling water, keep them there for two or three hours, and afterwards steep them for eight or ten hours in the hot carbolic acid solution (see page 85). All bedding or clothing that cannot be treated in this way, had better be burnt at once. If the weather permit, you should practise fumiga- tion as well as disinfection. Put 6 to 8 ounces of sulphur in a pipkin or any earthen vessel, and hang or place it over a bucket of water in the cabin or quarters that the sick man has occupied. Set it alight with one or two hot coals, close all ports, scut- tles, hatches, and in fact every opening, and keep them closed for six hours. Then open out well, bring up on deck everything movable, and scrub deck, bulk- * heads, and all other woodwork thoroughly with car- bolic acid water. A great many cabins, forecastles and deckhouses in British vessels are not sufficiently ventilated. It is far better to increase bed and body clothing, than
