Gilmerton, May 10, 1782 *** Relating to his wish to make a progress through the coal mines, to enable him to complete his treatise of the theory and practice of colliery; a collection of the curious and useful fossils of Scotland, for the museum, accompanied with descriptions, &c.; a long and interesting discourse on the Highland forest, which the writer states is nearer to his heart to explore than any thing else, &c. 404? June 11, 1782 *** A very long and interesting letter, relating to his discoveries in Scotland of some iron mines, &c. 4048 Williams (John) Another long and very interesting Letter to the Earl of Buchan, 5s. 6d. - Gilmerton, Nov. 3, 1783 Relating to the very great utility of air and exercise to the human frame, particularly when the spirits flag, with remarks on the beneficial use of gym- nastics, riding, &c.; also on the atmosphere in various dry and damp seasons, with its causes, &c. The letters of this writer are of a scientific character not easily met with. The present letter is four closely-written pages, folio. 4049 Williams (John) Another long and very interesting Letter to the Earl of Buchan, relative to the Mineral Survey of Scot- land, the Publication of his History of the Mineral King- dom, and other interesting scientific matter, 7s. 6d. Gilmerton, Jan. 10, 1784 *#* The writer, a Welshman, was mineral surveyor, and author of the History of the Mineral Kingdom ; he was employed to make a complete mineral survey of Scotland, which failed for want of encouragement from government.
