Also, our knowledge of organic chemistry and molecular physics has enlarged immensely. It has seemed desirable to bring the new principles that have been discovered to bear upon the sub¬ ject of development, and specifically upon the development of the child. In this attempt it is necessary to express much in the form of hypothesis, or in lines of work still to be un¬ dertaken. There may be sections which will appear specula¬ tive. But hypothesis is necessary to point the way to new research and speculation may help in the formation of hypotheses. The book has not, however, been written solely or pri¬ marily for the biologist. It is hoped that a careful reading of it will create a renewed popular interest in children as the most wonderful of natural creations. That there has been a loss of interest in reproduction is obvious from the rapidly declining birth rate. It is hoped that this book may restore an interest in reproduction of reasonably sized families as the greatest gift that one generation can make to the next. The book is the product of the mature considera¬ tion of a geneticist and eugenicist, and it is believed that it will show that the former can throw light upon the problems of the latter. The author is indebted to many sources and individuals for aid in the preparation of this work. For illustrations he has drawn heavily upon Developmental Anatomy of L. B. Arey, published by W. B.
