During the past year frequent samples of the water obtained from the chalk formation have been submitted for analysis, and it was observed that immediately after hea\y rain, the quality of the water invariably deteriorated, and on one or two occasions was found to be hardly safe for a domestic supply. Exhaustive inspections were made of the collecting area above the Springs, l3ut nothing was found to account for the jwllution, other than decaying vegetation, which was abun¬ dant. The whole question of water supplies was considered by yonr Water Committee, with the residt that your Council resolved to pro^dde Sterilisation Plants both at the Doscombe and Ashford sonrees of supply. The quality of water at Buriton is maintained, and in the case of Eastmeon, where the water is ])urchased in bulk from the Leydene Estate, the quality of the water was found to be satisfactory. Of the four su])])lies drawn from the chalk formation, in three cases the collecting areas are thickly wooded with Beech and other trees, but these areas are in no case subject to pollution from the cultivation of the adjacent lands. In no case is the land comprising the collecting area, owned by your Council.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29988810_0012.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
