    TEANSLATOR'S PREFACE. No man need apologize foi' urging any improvement in the treatment of any disease, whether this latter be self-inflicted or not. The mischief is done when the patient presents himself to the surgeon, and it is the business of the latter to restore the unfortunate man to his normal condition as soon as possible. If kind Nature usually does this after a time, should a surgeon refuse his aid in hastening a cure ? The same spirit that would formerly reject the use of anaesthetics in childbirth, because pain is the inheritance of sin, and to- day leaves the foundling to die fi'om neglect and ex- posure, declines to aid one suifering from certain painful and disabling diseases. May this narrow and illiberal spirit speedily pass away ! Professor Ultzmann, now well known to many Eng- lish-speaking surgeons, strongly insists upon the local treatment of rnost of the diseases discussed in this mono- jgraph—accessible diseases, local in their origin and course. His brilliant results justify his methods. At the same time, it is to be hoped that such as read may also see that the author does not forget those chronic cases
