Cornil and others explained this fact by saying that, if the improvement were due to destruc- tion of the bacilli, one would suppose that the morbid symptoms would disappear only gradu- ally. Ephraim has treated patients with carbonic- acid-gas inflations of the rectum. Bergeon made use of this method in the treatment of whooping-cough. Demme, of Philadelphia, has successfully employed the carbonic-acid- gas douche in a case of puerperal eclampsia.
