![2178 AMERICA: REFLECTIONS and Considerations Occasioned by the Petition Presented to the Honourable House of Commons, for Taking off the Drawback on Foreign Linens, etc., 28 pages, sm. 8vo (somewhat stained), T. Referring to the difficulties of the British exporters as compared with foreigners, and the trade to the West Indies, the American plantations, etc. **.. . if a Merchant was to send a Ship laden with Woollen, or all Linen Goods, only to any one Market there [America], as Trade now stands, he would over-stock the market.” The writer refers to the taking off the drawback on paper and says an inhabitant of Pennsyl- vania stated “‘ This Act is a greater Benefit to the Paper-makers of New-York and Pensil- vania, than if the Parliament had given them a Thousand pounds for their Encouragement.” “The Climate of North America, with regard to the Production of most Vegetables, particularly as to Hemp and Flax, is inferior to none in the known World... Mines of Iron Copper, and Lead, are already discover’d there.” ** There is not a Port in the World, out of Europe, where all sorts of European goods are to be seen in greater Plenty than there, in Curasoa; and, I believe, there has not been a Day these twenty Years when there were nc English Ships to be seen in that Harbour: But this is only one Port, etc.” 2179 AMERICA: report from the Committee Appointed to Consider the State of His Majesty’s Land Forces and Marines, so far as relates to the Distribution of the Money, Granted by Parliament for the Pay, to the Number of Effective Men, and the Methods of Mustering, and Re- cruiting, the said Land Forces and Marines. . . 6th Day of June, 1746, title+234 pages, last blank, folio, no printer, 1746 £30 Kress 4830. Detailed reports of money spent on each regiment, with a list of the strength and location of the regiments in England, the West Indies, Georgia, Jamaica, New York, South Carolina, Providence, North America, regiments embarking for Cape Breton (Fuller and Warburton), etc., giving the number of effective officers, men and horses. Includes interesting reports on the following regiments: Colonel W. Gooch’s regiment in North America; Major-General T. Wentworth’s expedition to the West Indies; Lieutenant- General Phillipp’s regiment in Newfoundland; General Dalzell’s regiment in St. Christ- opher. Reviewing the recruiting methods reference is made to the difficulties of securing men for Shirley and Pepperill’s newly formed regiments at Cape Breton caused by General Dalzell’s officers offering large sums of money to men joining their regiment on St. Christophers.
