With lanuiary, 1702. Mise a FURTHER AUTOGRAPH ‘NOTE AS <A POSTCRIPT TO CHE ABOVE LETTER. 14 pp., small 8vo. Together, £15 Discussing the Revolution, and prasing her lover Robespierre. A letter of the greatest importance. (Trans.) :—‘‘ No, Iam utterly unable to find words to express to the inimitable Robespierre, the surprise and emotion which the reading of his interesting and useful discourse in the last Revolution of Paris, aroused in me. The patriots have done well to insert it because this journal is read a great deal and goes everywhere. True Frenchmen cannot be warned any too soon against the execrable snare of war. But alas; I am afraid that it is already a settled thing in the National Assembly. Merciful Heavens; What treachery! Unhappy country, false guides are leading you astray by new tricks more cunning than those of the moderates; their character is not so markedly false but that they are all the more dangerous. ‘ Misguided patriots ’ they say to those who do not want war. Ah! let us continue to be mis- guided in order to stop it and save the country. There was another speech to the Jacobites on Monday, which was praised by the cruel partisans of the war who fell on it like ravens on their prey. If it is to be so, let us despair for the welfare of our Country. To conquer with the enemies’ power is to be conquered. That is the answer to the whole question. ‘‘ IT cannot resist the feeling of gratitude that the faithful Robespierre’s virtuous conduct and wise writings have inspired in me in spite of his advice not to do so. His touching modesty will produce the opposite effect to judge by myself. But He will be no danger to liberty; the noblest emulation will be the result.’’ Ete.
