    A consideration that naturally arises from mak¬ ing one organ the subject of peculiar attention; by having it always brought before the mind, its functions are more thoroughly understood, and Its derangement more speedily detected. Finding very little information to be obtained from authors (which on a subject of such import¬ ance is almost incredible) I have studied chiefly from the Book of Nature; and the plan I have adopted, I shall take the liberty of recommend¬ ing to the junior practitioner from my experience 4}f its advantages. At the public institution in which I act as physician, I have generally about a hundred pa¬ tients under cure; from these I daily select one or two, whose cases are the most interesting, and \ these I make the subject of close investigation, being particularly careful to obtain a complete history of the symptoms from the first period at which it is possible to conceive the disease could originate.
