If this plan does not give relief, a drachm of powdered opium may be given, either in gruel, or in a ball, about every two or three hours; and the reduction of the spasm may be further promoted by ap- plying a blister over the affected part. BLEEDING. This operation is best per- formed by non-professional persons with a fleam, and this instrument is perhaps the safest in their hands. The jugular vein is commonly selected; the point of the fleam is held over the vein, into which it is struck by a smart blow with a bloodstick. The point chosen is about two inches below the place where the two por- tions of the jugular vein unite at the angle of the jaw\ The horse,” says Professor Youatt, should be blind-folded on the side on which he is to be bled, or his head turned well away; the hair is smoothed along the course of the vein with the moistened finger, then with the third and little fingers of the left hand, which holds the fleam, pressure is made on the vein sufficient to bring it fairly into view', but not to swell it too much, for then, presenting a rounded surface, it would be apt to roll or slip under the blow. The fleam is to be placed in a direct line with the course of the vein, and over the ])recise centre of the vein, as close to it as possible, but its point not absolutely touching the vein.
