I make no doubt, that it was praSis'd in iEgypt long before Jacob and his family fettled there: for the calf which Aaron made as a lymbol, under vyrhlch the God of Ifrael was to be worfhipp’d, feems to have been copy’d after that of the Egyptians i. He made them a moU ten calf, Exod. 32. 4. The Jews appear in feveral inftances to have had a very great fondnefs for the fuperftitions of ^gypt 5 and we can conceive no other probable reafon, why the calf ftiould of all creatures at that time have been pitch’d upon, as the beft fymbol of God, or why the Ifraelites ftiould have been highly pleas’d with it, than that they had feen it worftiipp’d by the Egyptians, as the fymbol of their great God Ofiris. They had feen their abominations^ and their idols wood and fione^ fiver and gold^ which were amongft them, Deut. 29.17. which paflage feems to relate as well to the idolatry of iEgypt as that of the nations, thro’ which they had pafled. It is befides very proba¬ ble that very many, if not the greateft part of tliem, had com- ply’d with that idolatrous worfhip, whilft they were fettled in that country. This may be collefted from what Joftiua fays to theni. c. 24. v. 14. put away the Gods which your fathers fendd on the other fde of the floudy and in Mgypt: and it appears like- wife from the prophet Ezekiel, c. 20. v. 7.
