    「34 A surgical operation in this part of China is called eating the knifeand formerly the mere suggestio凸 of such a thing was enough to make many of our patients run away, but lately, and specially since the Revolution, ((knife eating，， patients are pouring in until we have more than we can handle. During' the past summer we had to turn patients away nearly every day, and when at last Dr. Snell aimounced one day he had caught up and wanted more Dr. Park furnished him with five from among his specials in fifteen minnties, amo打g them bei凸g an old mastoid with dead bone protrudi打g from the ear, a carbuncle as big as a saucer and a child with stone in the bladder. Within a radius of fifty miles of Soochow there is probably a population of some te打 millions, and what \ve wiill do, or can do, when even one out of a hundred of the thousands among this vast population iieeding surgical intei.ference begins to ask for the privUege of ‘‘ eating the knife ’’ is more than \ve can imagine. The furnishings for this operating room, and the fine skrilizer in the little room connected with it, were given by a ‘‘friend’’ in America.
