![from the other works on the same subject, according to the plan already adopted in the Library Catalogue. 2. Under the subheading of “ plates,” reference is made not only to “ atlases,” but also to any works of which the plates form a very important feature. 3. The Index refers to authors of papers in Journals and Transactions only when those papers have been issued separately, and copies have been presented to, or purchased by, the Society. This has given rise to the insertion of some names as writers on subjects who have not published substantive treatises on them, whilst others, having equal claim to notice in a bibliographical point of view, have necessarily been omitted because their names do not appear in the Catalogue. 4. All systematic works are entered under the general headings of Medicine, Surgery, &c., and the names do not recur under any of those subjects which are necessarily included in them as subdivisions; but reference is made under these subdivisions to collected works of authors in which special subjects are enumerated on the titlepage \e.g. “Bright (Bichard) Beports,” &c. (Lib. Cat., p. 97, anno 1856), are referred to under “Anasarca,” “Ascites,” &c.] 5. In cases of works with indefinite titles, such as ‘ Essays on Medical and Surgical Subjects,’ &c., the books themselves have been consulted, and the special subjects of which they treat included in the Index, with an addition to the author’s name of some portion of the title sufficient to indicate the character of the work \e. g. under “ Bleeding” (Index, p. 29), “ Paine (Com- mentaries)”]. 6. Names of authors on general classes of disease [e,g.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21697541_0010.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
