Heacknowledees that it fometimes failed, but imputes this failure (perhaps not alto- gether juftly) to the difference of the foil on which itgrew. It mutt, however, be recollected, that the plant he was then {peaking of was the Salix vulga ris alba arborefcence of C. Bauhin, or what is ufual- ly termed the white willow, which Mr James found by repeated trials, much inferior to that which he has recommended. From the favourable account given by Mr Stone of the Salix Alba, Dr Cullen has {trongly recom. mended it as a fubftitute for the Cort. Peruv. in agues and intermittents. After noticing its fenfie ble qualities, he fays, * thefe qualities perfuade me. _“ that it is a valuable medicine, and as promifing “* a fubftitute for the Peruvian bark, as any I have ** known to be offered.” Thefe remarks prove the doubtful effets of ‘the Cinchong ; and had the doctor lived to have noticed the fuperior effects of the Salix latifolia, there is no doubt but it would have made a confpicuous figure in his work on the Materia Medica. + But although Mefl.
