Crick Laboratory of Molecular Biology University Postgraduate Medical School Hills Road Cambridge, England Dear Professor Crick, Thursday, January 21 is fine. I have entered your name on the college calender so that this evening will be kept open for you, free of as many competing events as possible. We ordinarily schedule evening lectures at 8:00 P.M. A,s I indicated previously all of our students are required to fake a Physics, Chemistry, Biology, course sequence in their first two years here, so you may assume that your audience is conversant with the elementary ideas in these fields. However, few, except for biology majors, have been exposed to any modern trends in gen etics. So in no sense need you feel obliged to launch into a discussion of the most technical aspects of genetics to satisfy us. I think the audience will be happy if they can gain a general impression of where genetics stands today. Probably your best guide as to the level you siiould approach is the fact that Sigma Xi has partial sponsorship of your appearance here. Our Biology department has been pressing me for information on your arrival time on January 21. They have indicated that if you arrive by early afternoon they would very much appreciate an informal discussion by you in a student biology seminar. I think they have in mind a more detailed description of your current work than you would be offering to the general evening audience. In particular they mention they have been discussing in this sem inar the molecular interpretation of intra-cistronic complementa tion, and would like your comments on the implication of this to genetics and protein structure. This seminar appearance would depend upon what plane reservation you are able to make and, of course, your willingness to take on this extra task. I will hold off the biologists as well as I am able until I get your reaction on this. Please feel free to write me at any time you have questions about your visit.
