Nurses do not know, nor do they generally pretend Relation of . doctor. to know, the principle upon which the complex mechanism of the human frame rests, although great liberty can be taken with it when there is health, just in the same way that the captain and the passengers can implicitly trust the management of the ship to the mate when the ocean is calm and otherwise free from apparent danger. Nurses, or those who have charge of the sick, often rely on their insufficient knowledge, and thus put off sending for proper advice till the disease has assumed an aggravated form. It is known that in many cases, if assistance had been secured sooner, much suffering and pain would not in all probability have to be endured.
