As a Roman measure of capacity it is said (Littleton's Latin Dictionary) to have been equal to the ligula, that is, one-fourth part of the cyathus, and consequently the one-forty-eighth part of the English wine pint, or one-third of the fluid ounce. T. Cochlearium, rii n. signifies a measure of liquids, a spoonful, &c. As a Roman measure of liquids, it is said to have been the one-twelfth part of the cyathus, and, there- fore, the one-third of the cochleare.
