    have been situated on the ridge which stretches from St. Michaels to St. Stephens, field-paths crossing the site. Traces may still be found of the three admir- able roads which were made by the Romans after the subjugation of the Britons. The Ermin Street entered the county at Northaw Common, from Enfield, in Middlesex, and thence by Newgate Street to Hertford. It then crossed the Lea to Porthill, beyond which it passed into Cambridgeshire. The Icknield Street entered from the west, crossing the boundary of the county a mile north of Tring, then passing through Ickleford, towards Baldock, and from Odsey Grange onward becoming the boundary between Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The Wading Street entered the county at Elstree, near which was the Roman station of Sullonicse, skirted St. Albans on the west, and passed through Redbourn into Bedfordshire. Memorials of the Roman occupation have been found at many places. Verulamium was a very important town in those days, and Tacitus intimates that it was its wealth which prompted the Iceni, after sacking and burning London, to pass other military stations unmolested, in their
