    that oreat leveller of man’s handiwork, removes o slowly but surely the remaining traces of the past, and buries under one monotonous layer of earth sculptured stone and chiselled column, carved cornice and frescoed panel. From time to time interesting discoveries are made upon the site of the ruined city, but probably the most important one of the present century is that of the Theatre, which holds the unique distinction of being the only building of that nature as yet discovered in Great Britain. Of amphitheatres there are a number in existence in or near the sites of former Roman cities or stations, but this is the only erection, so far as is known at present, which was exclusively devoted to dramatic representations. About fifty years ago an archaeologist, while searching for remains upon the site of Verulam, came upon a small portion of masonry imbedded in the bank upon the north side of the drive to Gorhambury, the historic seat of the great Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam and Viscount St. Albans. The scene of the discovery is about one hundred yards from the entrance-lodge, and about twice that distance from the old Saxon Church of St. Michael, the Shrine of Baconians, wherein the great philosopher is buried.
