    % INFLAMMATION. The Pathology of Inflammation considered generally. Proceed we now to consider the pbenoinena which constitute the state called Inflammation, which has been investigated, and reasoned upon, and disputed about, by a great number of very celebrated medical philosophers. Before the dis- covery of the circulation of the blood by Harvey, the liver was considered as the centre of the vascular system; and it was a received opinion that inflammations were produced by some exces- sive stimulus applied, not to the part affected, but to that organ. Even long after the great discovery of Harvey, but little progress was made in the right comprehension of inflammatory diseases. There were chemical and mechanical theorists, of whom Boerhaave and Leeurvenhack were the principal representatives. Then came the vita-
