An extra- ordinarily full and interesting treatise on diet and regimen, with accounts of all sorts of foods and drinks, not only from the medical but from the ey point of view. There are sections on drink and tobacco (p. 513-321). The book also deals with general questions. 52 (Kitchiner (D.)] The Art of Invigorating and prolonging life by food, clothes, exercise, wine, sleep, etc., and peptic principles. Editio princeps of the transla- tion by Krautwadel of ‘‘ Vanquete de nobles caval- leros,” by the physician to Charles V. The Spanish original appeared in 1530, also in Augs- burg. The woodcuts are especially remarkable. On the verso of A4 Burgkmair shows the author in his study. There is a blood-letting man and alsu an interesting blood-letting scene by Weiditz. The subject of the book is mainly dietetics, including an account of the different qualities of victuals and beverages. The chapters are as follows: How often and when meals should be taken; In what order food should be eaten; What should be eaten for supper; What one should drink ; The use and abuse of the bath, of wine, of meat, etc., etc.; How to avoid sickness on journeys abroad ; How to prevent sea-sickness 3 How to cure insomnia, etc. Very rare. A long note on it in Brunet III., 1636. ‘‘Ce recueil de recettes ménagéres et médicales eut une trés grande vogue tant 4 la fin du quinziéme siécle qu’au cours du seiziéme.”’ Simon, No. 47, Vol II. Vicaire 779. The second rare little book has a dedication to the Canon of Wittemberg. On the verso of the last page is a song in honour of St. Martin, the patron saint of wine merchants.
