The title mentions a treatise on the Art of Cookery, which is not present in this volume. The book appears to be complete, is in a contemporary binding and has several notes of ownership nearly contemporary with its date. Frontispiece by Cruikshank: Charles Lamb was applied to for some origina verse, sent ‘‘ The Chimney Sweeper,’’ by William Blake. The book is a miscellany of verse and prose and forms one of the most heart-rending documents imaginable. Only 100 years ago these tiny children of 6 or 7 years old were forced up tiny apertures where they frequently died of suffocation or were burnt or scalded to death, and were brutally beaten if they were too terrified to proceed. A document which makes one despair of human nature, if by any chance present-day conditions have not already done so. 96 [Toland (John)] Amyntor, or a defence of Milton’s life. London, 1699 10s 6d 8vo. Old calf, one cover loose. The author had published a Life of Milton the previous year which raised a storm of controversy, like most of his other works.
