The author says in the preface (p. 31) that he originally wrote his book in French, but finding that it gave occasion for ribald jests he resolved to write it in Latin for “‘literatis hominibus’’ only; and he finishes rather sur- prisingly ‘Odi profanum vulgus Virginibus puerisque canto.’ The chief interest of the book now relates to the supposed separation of the pubic bones during parturition. 211 Sherley (Dr. Thomas) A Philosophical Essay: declaring the probable Causes whence Stones are produced in the Greater World. Fancy boards. [Italic and Roman letter. One historiated woodcut initial. Extremely rare work on Urinoscopy, and the first edition. Fine copy. 221 Vesalius (Andreas) Librorum de Humani Corporis Fabrica. Epitome, Cum annota- tionibus Nicolai Fontani, Amstelredamensis Medici. Amsterdam, Janssonius, 1642 £10 Folio. Old morocco. Very fine engraved title, representing Vesalius, with four physicians, dissecting a woman. Large portrait of Vesalius, 42 excellent copperplates, and the large figures of Adam and Eve, which are often absent, from this edition. Excessively rare book, of great ir- terest to collectors, as containing the copperplate engravings by Gemini after the woodcuts of tke original edition. These plates first appeared in the 1545 London edition, which is now practically unprocurable. The portrait, with a leaf of dedica- tion on recto, has been backed and mounted.
