Old calf. 1st edition of an important work for the history of aesthetic criticism. It was translated into English by Evelyn. Vellum. 12 portraits, with the lives of the painters, followed by a long life of Carlo Maralti, with separate portrait. 20 Michelangelo. Engraved title and 72 plates by Ghisi of the figures in the Sistine Chapel. The plates measure 14 by 10 cm. and have been inlaid to 4to size and bound in an early 17th century red morocco binding, with gilt panels on sides and ties. Esequie del Divin Michelagnolo Buonarolti. Celebrate in Firenze dall’ Accademia de Pittori scultori ed Architettori Nella Chiesa di S. Lorenzo il di 14 Luglio, 1564, Florence, Gumta, 1564 30s 4to. 18th cent. polished calf gilt. A large part of the book consists in poems in memory of M.A. by contemporaries. 22 Norgate (Edward) An exact and com- pendious discourse concerning the Art of Miniature or Limming, the Lawes, Natures and Propertyes of the Colours, the Order to be observed in the preparing and Using them both for Pictures by the Life and Landscapes and Historyes £10 MS. written on 28 pages of paper. Sm. 4to. Half calf. At end is the name of the transcriber : “Copied out Feb. 15th, 1663, T. Hanmer.” A most important unpublished MS. of the greatest interest for the history of art in England. The author, Edward Norgate, who died in 1650, was a famous Herald and letter writer. He taught heraldry to the sons of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, to whom this treatise is dedicated. He was a great connoisseur of art and purchased pic- tures for the Cabinet of Queen Henrietta Maria, and commissioned Jordoens for several pictures: The MS. as well as giving instructions for painting and drawing is full of technical information on the preparation of colours, etc. The D.N.B. and Walpole, ‘‘ Anecdotes of Painters,’’ mentions a MS. on the Art of Limning by this author as existing in the Bodleian library. Sir Thomas Hanmer, who copied the present MS., was the grandfather of the famous Sir Thomas Hanmer, speaker to the House of Commons. ' 23 Parrino (D. A.) A rare guide to the art treasures of Naples. 24 Richardson (J.) An Essay on the Theory of Painting. London, W. Bowyer for J. Churchill, 1715 10s 6d 8vo. Calf. An important critical work. 25 Stefanoni (Pietro) A series of 42 engrav- ings, with a general title, ‘‘ Alti nobilissimi amatori del disegno Pietro Stefanoni dedica. Rome, circa 1630 £4 4s Mounted in a small folio album, old panelled calf, broken. The plates measure 7 by 5 inches and the subjects, besides conventional figure studies, represent methods of writing and holding the pen for writing, the hands of a spiret player. There are two beautiful female portraits, one possibly of Bianca Capello and the portrait of the actor Giovanni Gabrieli holding a mask. Some of the plates are in two states. ; f Nagler states that Stefanoni was born in Vilenza in 1589.
