During the j’ear. the number of half-hour observations of factory chimney stacks has risen from 20 to 66 and the number of nuisances recorded was 20. The increase in atmospheric ijolkuion has been in large measure attributable to the overloading of existing steam-raising plant in an effort to comply with demands for increased output. The nuisances have been remedied in some cases by the installation of smoke consuming appliances or by the augimuitation of existing i)lant and in other cases by more studied attention to scientific stoking. SWIAOIING BATHS AXD POOLS. The water in the ])ublic swimming baths is chlorinated and at the Smethwick Baths is also treated with ammonia.
