    Letters to the present writer. February 12th, 1909. I was glad to see your letter and to hear how you are getting on. Why you have been freer from rheumatism since you went to Oxford, I will not pretend to explain. Anyhow I congratulate you. I have developed a catarrhe sec, and stay indoors as much as possible. To-day there is a bitter dry north wind, enough to shrivel up an old man. And I cannot walk fast enough to keep myself warm : thick coats are heavy and fatiguing. • • • • • • We were talking when I saw you last about the peaceful comfort of Walpole’s time. I bought John Morley’s life of him and read it with great pleasure. If you have not seen it I can recommend it. I made my first acquaintance with Oxford in 1857. I lodged with my father at a watchmaker’s named Chapman in Broad St. opposite Balliol: and we were very comfortable there. We went about a good deal, and saw many interesting places in the neighbourhood, as well as in the city. I remember very well Blenheim, and the fine Roman pavement and hypocaust at North Leigh. Also Cumnor, and what pleased me especially the antiquities at Stanton Harcourt, viz. the curious kitchen, the church and monuments in it, and the old tower in which Pope translated part of the Iliad. Also Headington quarries, Iffiey Church, &c. We ended by walking back to Windsor, by the river, along the tow- path ; taking things leisurely and stopping at places to sleep. On the river at that time, it is hardly too much to say that there was no traffic. The railway had been open long enough to destroy all the barge traffic: and steam launches had not been invented.
