The essential features are a strap buckled around the waist, to which a second strap is attached, which comes down over the coccyx and is attached to the specu- lum. This is composed of two blades, connected by a short shank, so that when one blade is in the vagina the other lies flat against the coccyx. The strap passes through one slot in the end of the free blade and a second at the con- necting middle piece, so that if traction is made on it the perineum will be retracted the right buttock. The uterine sound is a long, slender, more or less flexible instrument which is inserted into the uterine canal to determine its direction, depth, and calibre, and exceptionally may be used for replacing the organ. The probe is a more delicate instrument, and is a safer one to use where the position and depth of the uterus are to be ascertained. The sound may be made of copper which is silver-plated.
