Beautiful original fifteenth century binding of oak boards covered with stamped leather, two clasps, bearing fragment of metal showing that zt was formerly a chained book. (Strassburg, Johann Mentelin, not after 1470.) £75 Editio Princeps. The binding of the copy in the John Carter Brown Library is dated 1470. Bound up at the end are 45 leaves of contemporary manuscript; “ Glosula moralis Petri Blesensus super Job ad Henricum Regem Angliae’’ (12 folios), and ‘“‘ Dyologi sancti Hieronymi cum Petachio monarcho heretici dogmatis repertore quem sub <Actici et Chritoboli nominibus voluit annotari”’ (33 ff.). Old calf. Strassburg, the “‘R’’ printer, Adolf Rusch (1469). £1425 Magnificent copy of the extremely rare R.-Bible which seldom' oceurs for sale. No copy in the Collection of the British and Foreign Bible Society. The above book is printed in Roman type with the famous capital R, which has given this anonymous printer his modern nickname. ‘‘ He is now generally identified with Adolf Rusch of Ingweiler, who married Johann Mentelin’s daughter Salome and succeeded Mentelin in his business and was himself succeeded by Martin Flach. During his father-in-law’s activity Rusch may have worked partly for him, partly on his own account, and have taken over the business on Mentelin’s death in 1479, or before this if tha latter were previously incapacitated by illness.
