Fables originally manufactured to order, but now passing current by virtue of a certain degree of antiquity and so. ticketed and labelled that there is no virtue which shall not here find its adequate and cleverly unshrined reward, no vice which must go a-begging for an overwhelming and melodramatic retribution. (Strassburg, the ‘‘ R’’ Printer, about 1475.) | £32 10s; “This, like some other books by the “‘R” printer, appears to have been set up in seven sections, and compositors clearly had great difficulty in keeping to the number of leaves assigned to them. In the last quires (f ms M) of four of. the sections, space. was very limited, and in order to economize extra lines were added to some of the pages, and contractions used wherever possible, over 300 being used on 56b, the end of the first section, as against fewer than 70 on 57a, which begins the second. In quire G, on the othec hand, the compositor, having more space than he needed, reduced the: number of lines on some pages, used contractions only when needed, reduced the- number for the spacing of individual lines, and in the end has a blank of more than half a page, which obliges him to resort to the catch-words, “ sequitur scipio quoque,’” to show that there is no break in the text.’’ ‘Hain *4103.
