![certain questions in a manner altogcther differcnt from men. For examplc, thè urgent problem of how any professional occupation is to be harmonised with thè claims of parenthood, must of necessity receive a dififcrent solution in man’s case and in woman’s, above all when approached from thè medicai point of view. But from a purely educational standpoint, thè divergence is not apparent, for man and woman, father and mother alike, bave, or should bave, to face thè same dilemma ; for both bave parental duties to fulfìl ; and for botb, tbese are sometimes hard to barmonise witb tbe claims of professional life. Never- tbeless, it is barder for tbe woman to decide this problem, and to reconcile tbese conflicting claims: in part owing to tbe unwbolesome economie order in wbicb we live; in part owing to tbe obstacles wbicb tbe married woman wbo desires to give due weigbt to tbe claims of tbe intellectual life commonly en- counters from ber busband ; and in part owing to a number of psycho-physical considcrations peculiar to ber sex, and, above all, to tbe claims wbicb tbe immature cbild makes upon its motberd It follows from tbese considerations tbat it is far barder for thè intellectual woman than it is for thè man of corre- sponding abilities to reconcile tbese conflicting claims witbout suffering in bealth, intelligence, or afìections, or it may be in all of tbese ways at once. Is it tben SLirprising that we should find intellectual women to be scarce, in view of thè unceasing desertions from their ranks dependent on thè causes bere analysed ? 1 Matianne Weber conlencls ihal a woman who has to woik for ber living is necessarily unfilted for ihe fulfilment of ber materna! duties. {Bemftmd Ehe [“ Occupation and Marriage”].
