During the early part of the year applications were received from owners or occupiers to keep pigs. With a view to encouraging pig keeping, and thereby increase the pork supply and prevent waste, permission was authorised subject to the conditions being wholesome, the interests of the Public Health being regarded, and a suitable sty erected. Pigsties erected : 16. In several cases difficulties as to the removal or disposal of the manure has occurred, also complaints have been made as to the nuisance from rats. Towards the end of the year pig keeping was commenced on land near the top of the Down, and about 150 pigs were kept. Owing to the site not being suitable and from the want of proper buildings, drainage, etc., the premises became a nuisance to the neighbourhood, in consequence of which the pigs were removed to a farm situate outside the district. Petroleum Acts, 1871 & 1879. STORAGE OF PETROLEUM SPIRIT. At the end of the year there were 7 persons licensed to store and sell Petroleum Spirit.
