Ancient term for an indistinctness of voice, whether depending on defect of speech, or on disease of a ner- vous kind; also, a state of partial deli- rium : it has been more recently applied to defect from malformation of the soft palate. The systematic name of tlie plant Asarabacca ; the leaves, and particularly tlie root, are emetic and catliartic, and were employed before the introduction of ipecacuan for the pui-poses to which it is applied; the leaves are still used as stenuitatory: also called Nardui> montanu, or rustica, or sylvestris, Vulgago. Fr. anal, asaret d'Europe; syn. cabaret, m.; nard saucage, m.; oreille d'homme. A'sarum Hypocis'tus. Bot. A name for the Cytinus hypocinlus. Asbblin'. (AaeJAr;, soot.) Chem. Name given to a substance, supposed to be a pe- culiar pnnciple, discovered in soot; but said by others to consist simply of acid pyrelin, combined with that species of pyretin and pyrelain formed during the distillation of pyretin. The anthelmintic powers as- cribed to soot have been beheved to reside in this substance. Asbolina, a, f. See Diss, div. ii. s. vi. t. 4. Fr. anal, asboline, f. Ascen'sus, us, m. (Ascendo, to climb.) An ascending or climbing up : an ascent. Chem. Applied by Libavius and others to the act or process of sublimation, formerly termed Distillatio per ascensum. Pathol. Applied to the increase of a disease. As'cia, <s, f. (As if Aocia, from S-vw, to break.) A great hatchet. Surg. Applied, Gr. syn.
