Term for a vegetable juice, either liquid, or semi- fluid, or which spontaneously becomes con- crete ; of a resinous nature, and capable of yielding benzoic acid, soluble in alcohol or ether, but not in water: a bal'sam. Apoplec'- tic balsam; a teiTQ for a preparation of musk, amber, Peruvian balsam, volatile oils, etc., externally applied to the head and nostrils of apoplectic patients; formerly believed to be of great power in such. Term for a vinous infusion of various aromatic herbs, etc., mixed with several kinds of distilled waters, then digested and distilled; for- merly used internally and externally to pre- vent abortion by strengthening the fetus and the womb; whence its name.
