S.A.) of the gum henzoin; obtained by ex- udation of the balsam from incisions made in the bark of the stem of the tree Styrax benzoin, and hardened in the air; also called benzoe, and vulgarly, benjamin. Name given to a clear, colourless fluid, of a peculiar ether-like odour, formed by the decomposition of benzoic acid, also of other organic sub- stances, acted on by a high temperature It has also been called Benzin, and is a bi- carburet of hydrogen. Ben'zone. Chem. Name given to a coloiu-- less, oily fluid, produced by the distillation of the dry benzoate cf lime. Benzoni'trile. Chem. Name given to a clear, colourle>s liquid obtained by lieating to fu- sion in a retort the ben'zoate of ammonia. Ben'zoyle. {Benzoinum, benzoin; vKt], the substance from which anything is made.) Chem. The systematic name of the barberry shrub, or thorny box tree, common in most parts of Em-ope ; the ber- ries, gratefully acid and moderately astiin- gent, were formerly believed useful in biliiiry fluxes, etc.; on touching this shrub near the base with any sharp pointed body a sudden contraction is produced; also called O.ry- acantha, Py.tacantha, Spina acida.
