Name for a kind of fungus referred by Linnajus to the genus Lycoperdon; a Linn, genus of plants, Gl. Crtjptogamia ; Ord. Fungi. Juss. Fungi. The leather-like, corky, or woody, species of this genus are those which have a collar on their footstalk, or a pepper-like, acrid taste, or which become green, or blue, when cut, and are all either poisonous, or at least suspicious. They are to be distin- guished from the agarics, in having tubes under their caps, instead of gills. Fr. anal. hnlet, m. Germ. syn. Sclmamm, m. BSletus Cer'vi, Bot. The hard, dry, whitish substance, compact, reticulated, or spongy, which composes the variously shaped portions of the skeleton, or frame- work of the body. The doctrine of the bones, or a treatise on their genei'al nature and uses, is termed Osteology; their par- ticular description is called Osteography ; while their formation and growth are com- prised in the term Osteogeny. A former name for the plant which produces the An- gustura bark, and wliich was also named Cusparia Jebrifuga; now the bark is referred to tlie Galipea cusparia, as the proper plant from which it is obtained.
