Terra for a substance procured by distil- lation from common turpentine ; it may be regarded as oil of turpentine m its highest state of purity; with an equivalent of , oxygen, it forms camphor; also called Camphogen. The pharmacopoeial name (L.E.D. and U.S.A.) of the substance camphor, or more properly camphire, although the former name is now more used; a peculiar concrete substance prepared by distillation from the wood, pith, and knots of the trees Cam- phora ojicinarum, or Dryobalanops cam- phora, and Laurus camphora; found also in many other plants, especially of the aromatic kind.
