A term for that power by which the various solids and fluids are formed from the common circu- lating fluids. Af'fion. (Arab.) A name for opium. Afflatus, Its, m. {Afflo, to blow upon.) Med. A vapour or blast. Pathol. Applied to a species of eijsipelas, from the suddenness of its attack, as if caused by an unwhole some blast. AfFor'mas. An old name for Vitnun, or glass. Kuland, and Johnson. AfErodina. (Corr. 'Aippo'S'm), Venus.) An al- chemical name for the metal Cuprum, or copper. Afragar. (Arab.) Chem. An old name for verdigris. Af'rob. (Arab.) Chem. An old tei-m for Plumbum, or lead. Kuland, and .Johnson. Aif'usion. {Affando, to pour upon.) Chem. The pouring of water, or some liquor re- peatedly on a substance, to cleanse it. Med. Term applied to a remedy in low contagious fevers, consisting in the pouring on the pa- tient in the state of the greatest heat and exacerbation of the disease, and inthe early stage, of a pailful or liberal quantity of cold ■water; termed the cold allusion. Common term for the placenta, cord, and membranes, otlierwise called the secundines, because they are ex- pelled together after the birth of the child, which expulsion completes what is termed delivery. Term for those pains, generally felt, and which are more or less severe for a time, after the birth of the child and expulsion of the at'ter-birth, from the contractile efibrts of the uterus to return to its normal unimpregnated condition. Fr. syn. tranchees, f. pi.; uterines, f pi. Germ, syn. Nachwehen, f. pi. Agalactatio, Onis, f. ^ ('A, priv., or intens.; Agalac'tia, «, f. I 70X0, milk.) Med. Term for a want or deficiency of milk after child- birth ; but it also means an abundance or excess of milk. See Agala.ris. Fr. anal. agalactie, f. Genu. syn. Milchmangel, f. Agalac'toB. ^ ('A, priv.; 7<{\a, milk.) Agalac'tus, a, MOT. i Without, or having no milk ; Gr. anal. ayikaKTOs, applied by Hip- pocrates, dc Natur. Pucr. xi. 19, 20, to a woman who has no milk after child-birth. Agalax'is, is, f. Same derivation and meaning as Agalactia. Agal'lochum, Bot. An old name for the wood of tlie aromatic aloe. See Hand, Lignum aloes, Xyloalocs. Fr. anal, agalloche, m.; syn. bois d'aloes. Germ. syn. Alocholz,n. Agamicus, a, tun. ('A, jiriv.; 70/ios, marriage, terminal -<(ci)s.) Bot. Applied to a peculiar Class of plants which have no sexual organs, or none which can be detected; asexual; cryptogamic, this term being synonymous with Cryptogamius : agam'ic: aga'mous. See Diss. div. ii. s. vi. t. 6. Fr. syn. agamc, adj. Gei-m. syn. geschlcchtlos, adj. Agaricxim, i. n. {Agarum, a promontory of Sarmatia; or Agnrus, a river of the same countiy, where it was first discovered.) The agaric, a species of mushroom. A Linn, genus of plants, CI. Cryptogamia; Oi'd. Fungi. Juss. Fungi. There are many species of this genus. Fr. anal, agaric, m. Germ. syn. Bliitterschwamm, m.; Pilz, m.; Schwamm, ra. Note.—This word, hitherto employed, and inserted in Medical Dictionaries as Agancus, t, m., ouglit eor- tainly to be as now given, both the Greek analogue ayapiKhv, and the same word in Latin classical dictionaries, being in the neuter. Ag'arie. Bot. See Agaricum and Agaricus. Agaricus. See Agaricum and Note. Agaricus AlTaus. Bot. The white agaric, another name for the Boletus laricis. Agaricus AuriculsB For'ma. Bot. A name for the Peziza auricula, or Jew's ear fungus. Agaricus Campes'tris. Bot. The systematic name for several species of agaric, as Agari- cus ediilis, cantharellm,deliciosus,violaceus, etc., but according to Linn, it distinguishes the eatable mushroom of this country. Agaricus Cantharel'lus. Bot. A species of the agaric much esteemed in France; the chanterelle. Agaricus CMrurgorum, ill. Med. The sur- geon's aguiic; another name iov t\\e Boletus ■igniarius. Agaricus Cinnanioniexis. Bot. The brown mushroom, wluch has a pleasant smell. Agaricus Beliciosus. Bot. The delicious mushroom, so called because it has the flavour of a roasted mussel. Agariciis Mineralis. Med., Mineral. A term applied to a pure native carbonate of lime, found in the fissures of limestone rocks, used internally and externally as astringent, etc.; also called Z''ar(«ft fossilis, Funjus pe- traus. Lac luna, mountain milk, and rock milk. See ISIornchthus Lapis, GalaJ:ias. Agaricus Muscarius. Bot., Med. The bug agaric, which has the property of destroying bugs; it is a virulent poison, though em- ployed in Russia, Tartary, and Kamscliaika to produce intoxication, and is externally applied to ulcers, as escharotic. Agaricus Necator. Bot. A species of agaric, having a yellowish juice, which acts as a virulent poison. Agaricus Piperatus. Bot. The pepper agaric, or mushroom; also ca.]\od Fungus pijieratus albus, a species which has proved fatal when taken in quantity. Agaricus Praten'sis. Bot. The champignon; a species of mushroom which has little smell, is dry, but when cooked possesses an agreeable flavoiu'. Agaricus Procerus. A species of mushroom, commonly used in France and Italj', and somelinies in this country. Agaricus Theiogalus. Bot.
