Secondly, I hat the evidence of previous sewage or animal contamination is strongest in the case of spring and deep well water; but this evidence may, in the case of these waters, be safely dis- legai'ded. And, thirdly, that, as to hardness, rain water and upland surface water are, on the average, veiy mucb softer than spring and deep well vrater. 10. In respect of wholesomeness, palatability, and general fitness for drinking and cooking, our researches lead us to the following classification of waters in the order of their excellence, and founded upon their respective sources :— Wholesome.. Suspicious Dangerous I Very pi alatable. ■1. Spring Avater. 2. Deep Avell water. 3. Upland surface water. T Moderately 4. Stored rain water. / palatable. 5. Surface water from cultivated' land. 6. UiA-er Avater to Avhich sewage Palatable. gains access. 7. Shallow well water. 11. A large proportion of the AA'ater supplied for dome.stic purposes is used for Avashing, and in many towns consider- able volumes are used in manufactories. For these pur- poses, it is of the utmost importance that the Avaters should be soft—a quality which is not ahvays associated Avith Avhole- someness and palatability. Classified according to softness, waters from the various sources fall into the folloAving order:— 1. Rain water. 2. Upland surface Avater. 3. Surface Avater from cultivated land. 4.
