![vackert väder, * in the summer come out here, to enjoy themselves, when such people well know [T. I. p. 403] how to charge for what they sell. The principal livelihood of the others seem to be from houses and rooms, which they let to gentlemen, who in summer now and again, especially on Saturdays, Sundays, and part of Monday, come out here from London to stay, and take the fresh air. Rooms are here considerably dearer than in London itself, which is said to be due to this, that they have heavy taxes, utlagor, and that they get no one in the winter time to lodge there, wherefore they are obliged in the summer time, as it were, to take for both at once to compensate for the loss. Several houses in this place belong to gentlemen who live and reside in London, and only now and then journey out to Chelsea; but, in short, a third of the houses are said to belong to Sir Hans Sloane, who bought them many years ago, and now lets them to different people. [T. I. p. 408.] The 18th May, 1748. Sir Hans Sloane. In the morning I went to Chelsea, and spent part of the morning in Chelsea Apothecaries Garden. After- wards I accompanied Mr. Miller to Sir Hans Sloane to pay my respects to him. He lay to-day in bed, and looked a picture of old age, and was reported to be now in his 94th year. Mr. Miller gave him to understand, gaf honom vid. handen, the reason of my journey, that I was intending to visit the places in North America where no Botanist had been before, there to gather and describe all the plants and trees I should come upon, * From Copenhagen to Gottenburg, you have a delightful sail,—if in “ vackert väder,” as the Swedes say, &c.
