There are now no colleries in the urban district. The sole major industry is the l.C.I. Chemical Works which is of considerable size and smaller industries consist of a Brickworks at West Wylam and Pipe Works at Eltringham. In addition, there are many local workers at the Prudhoe and Monkton Ho.spital. POPULATION The midyear estimate of the Registrar General of the population of the urban district was 9,990, a decrease of 300 on the estimate for i960. This is the first time since i955 that there has been a decline in popu¬ lation ; in that year, there was a decrease of 20. In the intervening vears there has been a small gradual yearly increase until 1961. BIRTHS The total number of births registered during the yeai was 151 (80 male, 71 female), compared with 138, the previous yeai. There was an increase of 13 births, mainly female, thus partial^ making up for the decrease of 19 in female births in i960. There were two illegitimate births (both female), compared with four in i960 and one in 1959. The birth rate (corrected) for the year was 14.9 per 1,000 births and that for the countrv was 17.4. Still Births The number of still births remained small as in the previous year, two being registered in 1961 and one in i960.
