    classics, and of languages which he did not under¬ stand. Whether he was ever a schoolmaster in Dublin, is uncertain ; but one of his friends told me he was an usher. He next became a geographer; and wrote a work, which probably sold the better, because one on that subject had already been published by ano¬ ther author of the same name, a man of real talent. I have now before me an article, written for the Dictionary of Living Authors, by the Doctor himself; which, as a correspondent to whom I am indebted for this literary curiosity, observes, is such a fulsome piece of egotism and vanity, that prudence dictated its rejection. I am also informed by the same correspondent, that another physician has also been panegyrizing himself in the same way, particu¬ larly in Nisbitt’s New Medical Biography; the his¬ tory of which, my correspondent observes, is re¬ markable enough. Nisbitt is the man who pretended to cure can¬ cers; then raised subscriptions for a Medical News¬ paper ; and the subscribers were swindled out of their money. Those medical men who did not sub¬ scribe to his paper were shamefully and scandalously abused. I am assured, that five guineas is the price of a good life in his Medical Biography ; and that every physician, who does not subscribe this sum, is to be loaded with calumny and falsehood. But what could be expected from a hireling of Dr. Reece, or a colleague of Dr. Maclean ? B 4
