    lightning, hail, etc., illustrates the efforts of man to guard against loss due to hostile features of his weather and climate. The danger from tornadoes on the western plains and prairies of the United States has led to the building of underground “ dug- outs,” or tornado cellars, which are somewhat akin to the underground winter dwellings of some of the natives tribes of northern Siberia, built as a protection against winter storms. Such illustrations might be multiplied indefinitely. 21
