![possible extent; but although efforts are still being made to find some method of rapidly effecting the complete purifica- tion of sewage in one stage, far greater success has generally been achieved when no attempt has been made to combine the diametrically opposite conditions which are favourable to liquefying and oxidation by anaerobic and aerobic bacteria respectively, but rather to utilise the special powers of each to the best advantage by encouraging their action in two successive stages.
