Pages 77-83 contain a scathing criticism of the projected Expedition to Botany Bay. The author describes it as one of those ex- 21 traordinary acts which, as it has never had any precedent, will remain for ever without imitation, He forecasts the convicts speedily emancipating themselves from a feeble restraint, and filling the Chinese and Indian Seas with slaughter and depre- dation. In any case the Mother Country must relinquish any expectation of deriving any benefit from their labour and exertions, either immediate or remote. What would this “‘enlightened’’ writer say could he but see the colony now? This criticism did not appear until the 6th Edition of the tract. 348 Wyllie (J. W.S.)
