Blagden was a careful worker in physical research, and contributed many papers to the ‘Philosophical Transactions,’’ besides publishing several papers on medical subjects. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) was born in Birmingham, where his father had long been carrying on the trade of silver stamper and piercer. He entered his father’s business early, and, following the death of his father in 1759, founded his famous Soho works. In partnership with James Watt he was largely instrumental in making the steam engine a commercial success. He later became interested in the reform of the Copper Coinage, and in 1788 set up several coining presses at Soho to be worked by steam. After making large quantities of coins for the East India Co., several foreign governments, and certain of the colonies, he undertook the production of a new copper coinage for Great Britain in 1797. Boulton held a prominent place in the scientific society of his time, and Benjamin Franklin, Priest- ley, Darwin, Wedgwood and Edgeworth were among his intimate friends. 654 Evelyn (John) Numismata.
